If your not in an RP then you need to…today!

Ok, show of hands, who out there RP’s? Wow, that’s a lot of hands…

Now, I don’t an MMORPG like ‘WoW’ or something like that. Wow, look at all those hands drop…

Well, if you’re looking to be a writer or this creativity thing for any length of time then you need to train your brain to do it and there’s no better way in my opinion. See, I think everyone has a great book inside of them and thank the Great Spirit there are those of us who decide to put it down on paper.  But how did we, these novelists, get to that point of writing well enough to create a book?  Did we just pop this thing called a novel out of us by some weird magic called ‘talent’?  Nah, you ask most writers and they’ll tell you their talent was built on writing, writing, and just a boat load of writing. I’ve been doing this since grade school and it was just recently I finally feel like I have my ‘voice’ in writing, like I’ve finally feel the rhythm of writing.

And I got there by using RP’s…yeah, once again, not an MMORPG…an RP. An RP is nothing more than a forum on the Internet where fans and denizens go to express their inner ‘characters’ for a certain narrative, be it something familiar like say ‘The Avengers’ movie or comic to the less known like say an obscure Manga we here in the states have never heard of.  In these forums the fans and denizens get to ‘play’ their favorite character, or a character they create, by writing short, small stories in response to someone else’s stories.  Think like this, I write a small story about my knight riding off to kill the dreaded dragon and then someone comes behind me in the same thread and BAM, drops their addition to the plot with their story.  Now, I have to follow what this new piece adds, can’t leave it out or ignore it, and therein lay the beauty of this thing called a ‘RP’.  You, the writer, have to respond and adapt to the story and not to what you want to write.  You have to grow in a sense and carry the plot forward and this growth gives ‘voice’ to your writing and that my friends is how you get create a book, because if anyone says they wrote a novel in the first sitting they’re lying to you like that rug in the hall.  It takes rewrite after rewrite, change after change, to sometimes get it right.  Trust me, I know all too well…

Yeah, I say if you want to write and you haven’t quite reached the level where you feel comfortable with what comes out on paper or you’re afraid to show someone your stuff…then an ‘RP’ is the best way to go…

Just my opinion and we know how those are don’t we…

Thank for sharing!
